Average Google Ads cost per click in the UK — and how to pay less

Cost per click is an auction outcome, not a price list. What you pay depends on how many competitors want the same query, how relevant Google thinks your ad and landing page are, and what your competitors are willing to bid.

The industry ranges below are useful for sanity-checking, not for forecasting. Your own account data always wins.

Typical UK CPC ranges by sector

These are broad bands seen across UK search campaigns. Emergency and legal categories sit at the top because a single conversion is worth hundreds or thousands of pounds.

  • Legal and injury claims: £8–£40
  • Insurance and finance: £6–£25
  • Home services and trades: £2–£9
  • B2B software and services: £4–£15
  • Ecommerce retail: £0.30–£1.50
  • Local services (hair, beauty, fitness): £0.80–£3

Why two advertisers pay different prices for the same click

Google ranks ads by Ad Rank, roughly your bid multiplied by expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. A well-matched ad with a fast, relevant landing page can outrank a higher bidder and pay less per click.

This is why Quality Score work is a cost lever, not a vanity metric. Moving an ad group from Quality Score 4 to 8 can cut effective CPC substantially on the same bid.

Five levers that actually reduce CPC

In rough order of impact for a small account:

  • Tighten ad groups so each one has a handful of closely related keywords and ad copy containing those exact words.
  • Match the landing page headline to the query — the same change that lifts conversion rate also lifts landing page experience scores.
  • Add negatives aggressively so budget concentrates on high-intent queries with better click-through rates.
  • Narrow geography and dayparting to hours and areas that convert; irrelevant impressions drag CTR down.
  • Use exact and phrase match for core money terms so you stop paying premium prices for loose matches.

The metric to watch instead of CPC

A cheaper click is not automatically a better click. If your CPC halves while cost per conversion doubles, you made things worse.

Track cost per conversion and profit per conversion. CPC is a diagnostic — cost per conversion is the scoreboard.
